The Island of Kefalonia has been made famous in the last decade by Louis de Bernieres novel Captain Corelli’s Mandolin. A love story based on loosely historical events when the Kefalonia was invaded first by the Italian army and later by the Germans. This has made Kefalonia holidays, including Kefalonia packages deals particularly popular.
The Island is named after the Greek Mythological figure Cephalus which means ‘Head’ in Greek. The population is expanding and is now at 45,000. The Island is the largest contingent of the Ionian Islands in Western Greece. The Islands capital Argostoli has been its administrative centre since 1757. It is home to a third of the islands inhabitants. Lixouri has a marginally smaller population and is the Islands second city. Near Lixouri in the Paliki Islands is the highest point on the island ,Mount Ainos at 1628m. A higher altitude than Ben Nevis in Scotland.
The Islands Meditteranean climate is attractive to those looking for package holidays. There are many other attractions to the island icluding Melissani Lake and the Drogarati cave. Recent Archaeology in 2006 uncovered a Roman grave complex. It has been described as the most important Roman find in the Ionians. With gold jewellery, glass, clay pots, bronze artifacts and copper coins. Two monasteries open to the public include the Haghia Panagia .
Museums include the Korgialeneios in Argostoli, the Kosmetatos Foundation in Argostoli, the archaeological museum in Argostoli, the lakovatios-library in Lixouri and the Fiscardo museum.
Recent scholarship has suggested the Island has had connections with the great poet of Greek civilisation, Homer. Who was famous for his Odyssey and Iliad. The poet offers 26 descriptions of specific places on Odysseus’ home Island but these are considered not to match Ithaca. Where historically these descriptions are perceived to relate. The recent book Odysseus Unbound has suggested that Paliki, now a Kefalonian peninsula was a seperate Island during the Bronze age and Homers day. That Homer was in fact looking at Paliki.
The Ionian Islands do get a little more water than many Meditteranean Islands and Kefallonia is no exception. April has an average of thirty inchs of rain while July has average temperatures of 26 degrees C.
The golden sand of Kefallonia is typified at Myrtos beach near Argostoli town. 22 km from the capital is Antisamos beach with pebbles and turquoise waters, and is particular attractive for Kefalonia holidays, surrounded by impressive verdant hills. Other beaches of the Island with tourist facilities include those at Emblisi, Foki and Lourdas, all are popular for Kefalonia package deals.
